More drama from Halas Hall: Grossman vs. Griese again?

By BRANDON MANGIA

Here we go again.

After Grossman’s bomb to Berrian to win the game Sunday against the Raiders, two things emerged: One, yet another change in quarterback may be in store, depending on the severity of the injury to Griese’s shoulder; and two, the Bears, at 4-5, still have faint hopes of postseason play.

But all Sunday really proved was that the Bears aren’t as bad as a team that had the No. 1 pick in the draft this year and are looking at another top-five pick next year.

Some in Bears Nation thought this win could serve as a confidence builder and spring them toward a late playoff push. As nice as that may seem, the same thing was supposed to happen after road wins at Green Bay and Philadelphia, but the Bears followed up those games by losing to Minnesota and Detroit.

For the Bears to have a realistic shot at making the playoffs, they must first go into Seattle next week and then win two games in a row for the first time this year. Even if the Bears beat an equally inconsistent, but better, Seahawks team, they return to Soldier Field, where they are 1-3, for back-to-back home games against the Broncos and Giants. So, let’s take Sunday’s win for what it was, a must-win game against an inferior team with a horrible quarterback and an equally bad defense.

For Cedric Benson, the game against the Raiders gave him a chance to prove he belonged, considering the Raiders have the second-worst rush defense in the NFL. Yes, his 29 carries helped set up the late bomb to Berrian and yes, he came up with some crucial first downs on third and short, but come on. Benson only had 76 yards and saw the ball 29 times! Most NFL backs would get at least 120 yards with that many carries. Can you say Michael Turner?

And for Rex Grossman, it was nice to see him come in and do well. He’s been criticized more than any other NFL quarterback for the past year and a half. But don’t jump on the bandwagon just yet. Grossman did what he always does. He threw some nice passes and also threw a couple wobbly passes that could have easily been intercepted. There’s no question Rexy has a great arm, but his decision-making is the thing that is always in question.

Let the quarterback controversy at Halas Hall begin…again.
