This week on TV: ‘Monday Night Raw’
November 30, 2007
For fifteen years, “Monday Night Raw” has been changing the face of professional wrestling.
Wrestling marks and casual fans alike have seen countless legends grace the squared circle of WWE’s flagship show. Hulk Hogan, The Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels have all epitomized their careers on this USA show.
Now, if these names don’t mean anything to you, it’s understandable. Wrestling has always been associated with a more low-brow group of individuals who may or may not drink Blue Ribbon and live in a double-wide. But in the mind of a true wrestling fan, it’s an insult to each such jabberwocky.
Every Monday night, “Raw” offers an epic two hours of drama, intrigue, hope, triumph and heartbreak. The show is a hybrid of soap opera thematic story lines, which require the viewer to choose between good and evil, and the execution of a solid wrestling match.
Yes, wrestling has a pre-determined outcome and scripted plots, but the intensity that goes along with watching a prestigious title match is incomparable.
Currently on the show, the re-emergence of “Y2J” Chris Jericho has set up a feud with World Wrestling Entertainment Champion Randy Orton. The legendary “Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels is trying to teach the brash and cocky Mr. Kennedy a lesson in respect, while the real-life chairman of the company, Vince McMahon, is dealing with his illegitimate son, who is also a leprechaun.
These engaging and often bizarre situations are what keep wrestling fans going. Week after week, the dramatic build-up peaks at a monthly $40 pay-per-view. Although being a wrestling enthusiast may put a hole in your pocket, it will put a smile on the face of your heart.
