Student charged with filing false police report

An NIU student is charged with disorderly conduct after falsely reporting a robbery.
On Oct. 30, a robbery was reported in the 700 block of N. Annie Glidden Road.
The victim reported that a person approached him and demanded money. The victim told police he then produced a knife and the suspect ran away.
DeKalb Police re-interviewed the alleged victim Thursday and the student said he made the story up about being robbed. The victim said he made up the story because he was “bored and tired,” according to a DeKalb Police Department press release.
On Thursday, a warrant was issued for the arrest of the student, Thomas G. Chemler, 19, of DeKalb. He is charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.
“We think of this as a deterrent for anyone else who wants to do this,” said Lt. Gary Spangler of the DeKalb Police Department. “A lot of man hours go into [investigating a crime such as was reported.]”
