Solid weekend vaults Huskies setter Caputo into MAC lead

By ANDY PRUSKI

With two solid performances last weekend on the road, senior setter Mandi Caputo has taken over the top of the MAC in assists per game.

The Chicago native is now averaging 11.95 assists per game after going for 47 and 39 in a pair of three-game matches last weekend in wins against Akron and Buffalo.

While it is an individual statistic, it is one that involves many players and according to coach Ray Gooden, is a reflection of the whole team.

“It involves someone else getting her the ball in a position to set it,” Gooden said. “Also, if there is only one person getting all the kills the number won’t be that high so there are really a lot of players involved in that but Mandi has been doing an excellent job.”

Don’t call it a comeback

Sophomore middle-blocker Joelle Beisel continues her progress while dealing with an injury.

Beisel has seen limited time on the court this season, but has made positive impacts in practice.

“Joelle is playing well and is continuing her comeback,” Gooden said. “She’s got a little ways to go still but she has been making positive strides.”

In a match against Ball State earlier this month, Beisel played in five games and had four kills while helping an NIU blocking attack which had 15.5 team blocks.

Not-so-sweet home

When the Huskies return home this weekend for a pair of games against Kent State University and Ohio University they will no doubt be greeted by a positive fan base.

Despite that, Victor E. Court has not been to kind NIU this season. The Huskies are just 2-6 at home this season, giving them an away record of 9-5.

The Huskies were successful in their latest home match which came late September when they beat Eastern Michigan University, which has sparked a five-match winning streak.
