Women’s soccer takes win, tie without allowing a goal

A pair of shutouts highlighted the weekend’s action for the NIU women’s soccer team.

The Huskies (6-5-4, 3-3-2) blanked Ohio 1-0 Friday, while Sunday’s match at Akron resulted in a scoreless tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock held opponents scoreless for the fourth and fifth time of the season. Her 12 career shutouts are now a school record.

NIU jumped on the board early in Friday’s match. Senior Karen Enockson scored her fifth goal of the season at 7:34, and the defense held off the Bobcats for the rest of the game. Enockson’s goal came off an assist by sophomore Lisa Maier.

“The girls played really hard for 90 minutes,” said head coach Marci Miller Jobson. “Curnock came up with a really great save at the end of the game.”

Curnock made five saves in Sunday’s match against the Zips. Both teams got off seven shots Sunday, but neither was able to find the net.

“Akron was kind of a battle,” Miller Jobson said. “I think we came out a little flat in the beginning, but in the second half we played much better. The game against Akron was a battle.”

Nearing the end of the regular season, the Huskies look to finish up the year strong. According to the coaching staff, they have the mentality to do so.

“This is a team of perseverance. They’re a battling team and they don’t give up,” Miller Jobson said. “On the road, you sometimes feel lucky to get the tie and the win; not this team, they want the win.”
