Skids busted in BGSU win, no revenge to be had against Toledo

NIU women’s soccer overcame one obstacle in its path, but stumbled over another to open the MAC season.

The Huskies (4-3-2, 1-1) earned a split decision over the weekend with a 3-2 win over Bowling Green (4-5-1, 1-1) on Friday and a 4-1 loss to Toledo (7-2-1, 2-0) Sunday.

Friday’s win was the first road win of the 2007 season, the first conference opening game win since 2004 and the first victory over BGSU in five years.

Forward Karen Enockson tallied three goals over the weekend, scoring twice Friday and once Sunday against the Rockets. Last year’s leading scorer is on a three game goal-scoring streak.

Enockson scored early against the Falcons on a goal assisted by junior forward Jestina Orlando at 1:19. After the Falcons tied it up before halftime, Enockson and junior midfielder Erin Fahey added two more scores for NIU. BGSU added another score late in the game, but it was not enough to top the Huskies.

Freshman goalkeeper Audrey Holmer played all 90 minutes as she recorded three saves and earned her second victory of the year.

“We played well on Friday,” said associate head coach Paul Jobson. “It was good for [Enockson] to finally hit her stride in MAC play.”

There was a totally different outcome on Sunday as the Huskies found themselves buried 2-0 in the game’s first 10 minutes.

The Rockets scored again early in the second half to mount a 3-0 lead. Enockson scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the game’s 67th minute before Toledo added another goal to finalize the score.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve given up four goals in a game,” Jobson said. “Once you’re down two goals early, you try to fight back and are susceptible to give up more goals.”

Sunday proved to be a tough test for the Huskies but they are already looking forward to next weekend’s action, Jobson said.

“Things weren’t falling our way but we’ve got to regroup and put together a quick turnaround,” Jobson said.
