Women’s soccer splits weekend MAC contests

The weekend’s action for the NIU women’s soccer team was a roller-coaster ride.
NIU suffered a 1-0 double overtime loss to Kent State Friday. The Huskies (5-4-2, 2-2) bounced back from the loss to defeat Buffalo 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Friday’s match proved to be an offensive stalemate until the last minute, when the Golden Flash punched in a goal with 39 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
The Huskies outshot the Golden Flash 7-3 in regulation, but could not convert on their opportunities in overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock made two saves while playing all 110 minutes in the net for the Huskies.
“We’ve got to be able to put away those opportunities,” said associate head coach Paul Jobson. “We had plenty of chances to put it away and at the end of the game, it fell their direction.”
The disappointing loss just adds to the experience of the young Huskie team.
“I’m proud of the way they played. The girls fought for the entire time and the effort was definitely there for us,” Jobson said. “You want to know what a loss feels like because you grow so much more after a loss than you do a win.”
The Huskies did a little growing over the weekend as they rebounded and scored two goals in the first 18 minutes of Sunday’s match against Buffalo.
Sophomore Lisa Maier scored her first goal of the season off an assist by junior Thea Johnson at the 12:30 mark. Maier then lifted a corner kick that junior Maddie Lehman headed in for the score at 17:25 to put NIU up 2-0. Lehman’s goal was her second of the season.
“After the loss on Friday, we had to turn it around and get a win for the weekend,” Maier said. “That’s what we did and we dominated.
The Bulls responded with a goal at 21:24 to bring the score to 2-1, which proved to be the final. The Huskies outshot the Bulls 16-7 in the victory. Curnock played the entire match as goalkeeper and recorded two saves.
“I’m most happy with how they bounced back from Friday,” said head coach Marci Miller Jobson. “I thought they battled really well today and they played an overall really good game.”
