Structure fire causes $40,000 in damage
October 16, 2007
No one was injured in a structure fire Friday morning at 1521 Hulmes Drive.
At 9:24 a.m., the DeKalb Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the residence east of Hopkins Park. The first arriving crews found the fire located inside the house’s attic and were able to put out the fire by opening the ceiling in the kitchen area. The fire was contained in the attic of the house.
A grease fire on the stove the night before caused a spark to enter the attic through a power vent above the stove, said Fire Chief Lanny Russell.
It is believed the spark entered the attic, where it smoldered all night long until finally getting enough heat to burst into flames, Russel said. The fire was ruled accidental.
Crews then completed an overhaul to make sure none of the insulation in the attic area contained any spots that could rekindle. The fire was under control in 25 minutes, according to a DeKalb Fire Department press release.
The fire damage was estimated at $40,000.
