Gabel Hall construction nears completion

Current renovations on Gabel Hall are nearly complete.

The building, which opened in 1958, currently serves myriad purposes, including possessing a swimming pool and dance studio and being used by child development programs.

Recent renovations will likely be completed by the end of the month, said Ken Pugh, director of Materials Management.

Construction includes installation of new sidewalks and new windows and doors, among other things.

One of the most prominent renovations made to the building is the installation of solar panels.

“This is our first experiment with solar panels,” Pugh said.

Pugh said solar panels will increase energy conservation and that NIU may have opportunities to experiment with solar energy in the future.

The renovations seek to eliminate problems such as dramatic change of temperature from floor to floor.

During the summer, leaks in ducts were discovered that contributed to varying temperatures between higher and lower floors. The duct work was replaced during recent construction.

“We hope this makes the classroom areas a little more comfortable for students,” Pugh said.

Last year, Gabel Hall was equipped with variable frequency drives, now providing the building with occupancy sensors that trigger lights on.

Robert Albanese, associate vice president of Finance and Facilities, said improving security in Gabel Hall was of great importance during the renovation process.

“We were trying to make sure it’s more secure and safer for the kids there,” Albanese said.
