Womens soccer rebounds on senior day

A dramatic win on Senior Day at Huskie Soccer Field on Sunday capped off a victorious weekend for the NIU women’s soccer team.

Karen Enockson’s goal with 1:07 remaining in regulation lifted the Huskies to a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan.

The senior’s sixth goal of the year earned the Huskies (8-5-4, 5-3-2) their second consecutive MAC Tournament appearance.

NIU’s eight shots on goal forced Eagle goalkeeper Maggie Manville to make seven saves, including a diving save midway through the first half, but she could not keep out the winning score.

Enockson scored on an assist from sophomore Lisa Maier and was promptly tackled by excited teammates in front of the net.

“I was just thinking ‘get it in the net’ and everything just became a blur,” Enockson said. “Lisa made an awesome play and all of the credit goes to her. I would have liked to come out 3-0 and put it away right away, but to win dramatically was great.”

All season long the Huskies have been looking for scoring. They have been creating the opportunities, but were unable to find the net; however, they found a way to come up big when it counted.

“People always ask me what’s my greatest soccer moment,” said head coach Marci Miller-Jobson. “Playing for the National Team was great, but [Sunday’s win] was my greatest soccer moment. We needed that win. The girls are such a fighting team, they’re battlers. The seniors today came out to win this game against a great Eastern Michigan team.”

Friday’s match, while not as dramatic, still served as a meaningful win for the Huskies.

NIU defeated Central Michigan 3-2. Sophomore Kelly Mullany and juniors Thea Johnson and Maddie Lehman each scored for the Huskies, with junior Jenna Clausen notching two assists. Lehman’s goal in the game’s 69th minute proved to be the game winner.

“Jenna’s free kicks were exceptional but also give credit to Maddie Lehman. She’s been out two weeks and she comes in to get the game-winning goal,” Miller-Jobson said. “We’ve been working with Thea all week on just being aggressive in the box. She was aggressive, she got forward and scored a great goal.”

Last weekend was the first weekend sweep of the season for the Huskies.

“We played our best two games of the season this weekend,” Enockson said. “It’s great that we can put a weekend together when we get two great victories, especially going into the end of the season and the playoffs. It’s just a perfect time for us to be playing well.”
