Due to the rising price of scrap metal, DeKalb’s $10 keg deposit is increasing.

“The distributors are raising the price,” said Amit Patel, manager of DeKalb Liquor Mart.

As of Oct. 1, the keg deposit price will rise from $10 to $35 because of the increased number of kegs being scrapped throughout the country.

The cost for a company to replace a keg is about $150, said Mark Hein, vice president of DeKalb Iron & Metal Co.

“The scrap price might be $20 or $30,” Hein said, making it more enticing to scrap the keg than return it.

Recently, the scrap metal and beer industries have combined to stop the scrapping of kegs.

“We don’t buy the kegs,” Hein said.

Liquor stores throughout DeKalb have not experienced this problem.

“At least here, they usually want their $10 back,” said Jared North, a manager at Thirsty Liquors. “I think it’s more of a statewide thing instead of local.”

By making the deposit price more, distributors believe that the number of people who do not return kegs will be largely reduced.

Michelle Laga, senior special education major, agrees with the distributors.

“It is an easy way to get back your $35,” said Laga. “You just have to return the keg.”
