Non-conference play for women’s soccer team ends in a Flash

Non-conference play is coming to a close for the NIU women’s soccer team and there are still a few kinks to work out of the system.

The Huskies (2-2-2) host St. Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the final non-conference match of the season. This will be the first time the Huskies square off with the Red Flash.

“This is a new opponent and like we learned on Friday (against Loyola), we have to show up to play every game,” said associate head coach Paul Jobson. “We’ve got to be ready for just about everything.”

As the Huskies bounce back from their road trip in which they lost and tied, they will look to fine-tune their offense. Junior transfer Jestina Orlando leads the team with two goals this year, but the team has only put three balls into the net.

“We’re right there every game. We’re close,” Jobson said. “We have been working on finishing and this is our last preparation for conference.”

NIU will also look to continue the defense that leads the MAC with a 0.459 goals-against average which ranks 17th in the country. The Huskies have allowed only three goals in six matches this year.

Morale remains high as there are still a dozen matches left to play in the regular season.

“The girls are in a good mood and they are pretty positive,” Jobson said.
