More road tunes for NIU soccer

By CHRIS TAGLER

NIU’s men’s soccer team has been playing to a familiar tune lately.

However, for head coach Willy Roy’s squad, “On the Road Again” doesn’t sound quite as good as “Home Sweet Home.”

Nonetheless, the Huskies travel to Ohio this weekend for a pair of Mid-Continent Conference match-ups against Cleveland State and Wright State University.

The Huskies (2-2-1, 9-5-1) roll into Cleveland today for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Vikings of CSU. The Vikings currently occupy second place in the Mid-Continent standings, sporting a 3-0-1 conference record. Cleveland State is led offensively by Paddy McDaid. McDaid has racked up 22 points this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting on two others.

On Sunday at 2:00 p.m., the Huskies will butt heads with the Raiders of Wright State University. Wright State is carrying a 2-1-1 conference record into this weekend and is 6-4-3 overall.

WSU, who is well-balanced on offense, has 12 people on the roster who have scored goals during the course of the season.

NIU has been on a tear recently, shutting out their last three opponents.

Freshman Brian Hecht guarded the net for the last two shutouts versus Western Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University, while Brad Nordeng logged the whitewash against Bradley.

The Huskies are shooting for a double-digit victory mark as well as finishing in the top half of the conference. This may sound easy with nine wins down and four games to go, but Roy knows it’s not that simple.

“Obviously, for us to finish in the upper half of the league, we need to get a couple more wins. Unfortunately, getting them will not be that clear-cut”, Roy said.

Roy and his squad will have to get past the Midwest Region’s No. 1 team in Creighton University as well as a tough Valparaiso team after this weekend’s battles.

“We’ve done some positive things recently and we need to do just that even more,” Roy said.
