Running backs make a good showing in the WAC

By BEN GROSS

Welcome to the Football Family Feud.

We’ve asked 100 random people this question and have placed the five most popular answers on the board.

The question: Can you name a running back from the Western Athletic Conference?

Ahhh, the Smith family buzzed in first. Your answer? Idaho’s Deonte Jackson.

Show me Jackson. Survey says…the number four answer.

Thomas family, you could steal the category. And you’re answer is Boise State’s Ian Johnson. Show me Johnson…the number one answer!

Many sports fans know WAC running back Ian Johnson from his performance on and off the field in last year’s Fiesta Bowl.

However, they might be shocked to learn that the junior is second in rushing in the WAC. The conference leader: Deonte Jackson of Idaho.

Jackson has 426 yards on 80 carries this season. That’s 134 more yards on the ground than Johnson so far, and enough to make Jackson the No. 7 rusher in the nation.

The sophomore running back has proven himself to be a challenge for any defense too.

In the Vandals season opener against USC, Jackson rushed for 99 yards. The Trojans rank as the No. 9 rushing defense in the nation, allowing an average of 64.5 rushing yards per game.

“[He] looked awfully good on tape,” Novak said of Jackson. “I’ve been impressed how they’ve played Washington State and Southern Cal in two of three of their games.”

The 5-foot-8 and 181-pound running back has also been impressing the NFL, at least an NFL player. The Idaho running back’s uncle is Steven Jackson, the starting running back for the St. Louis Rams.

The NFL running back was able to see his nephew in action against USC and was impressed.

“I knew Deonte was a skilled back, and I knew that eventually he was going to make his mark in Idaho,” Steven Jackson said to the Idaho Statesman. “But I didn’t know he would do it so quickly, especially against a No. 1 team like USC.”
