Sycamore to host annual block party
September 13, 2007
Sycamore is gearing up for a watermelon seed spitting good time.
Discover Sycamore is a branch of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce and will host its 6th annual block party from 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday. No entrance fee is required.
“It’s just like one great, big, friendly, community get together,” said Alex Dailey, administrative assistant to the Sycamore Chamber.
Various family-friendly activities are scheduled to occur throughout the day, beginning with a $2 showing of “Shrek the Third” at 1 p.m. at the Sycamore State Street Theatre, 420 W. State St. Block party highlights include a parade, games, food, live music and a children’s stage which will feature a juggler and various contests like a watermelon seed-spitting contest.
“I can just picture those seven to 10-year-old boys spitting out their seeds right now,” said Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber.
Parade participants are encouraged to “Think Green” when decorating their bicycles, tricycles, wagons, strollers or scooters.
“It’s a natural tie-in to what we’re doing in Sycamore to help conserve the environment,” Treml said.
A 32-foot climbing wall will be available from 3 to 7 p.m.
“The rock-climbing wall was a huge hit last year,” Treml said.
Juggler Jason Kollum has been juggling for 10 years and performed at last year’s block party.
“It’s always great to work at these different festivals throughout the year,” Kollum said. “Last year drew a great crowd. I’m looking forward to another nice show.”
The evening’s events will cater more toward adults and will feature a beer and margarita garden as well as music by “The Menagerie” and “Hi-Infidelity.” An adult bags tournament begins at 5:30 p.m.
Registration for the tournament is $10, and $100 will be awarded to the winner.
“There’s something there for everyone,” Dailey said. “We see many different age groups, from your babe-in-arms to your senior who just wants to come
watch people and visit.”
