Cavel reopens

Sept. 7, 2006

U.S. House of Representatives passes the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, Congress adjourns before the Senate can review the bill

May 24, 2007

Gov. Rod Blagojevich signs bill outlawing horse slaughter for human consumption.

Cavel appeals in court.

June 1, 2007

U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Kapala grants Cavel 27-day “Restraining Order” to resume operations while in court.

June 19, 2007

Humane Society appeals Kapala’s decision.

June 28, 2007

Kapala denies Cavel operations while appeal occurs.

July 5 2007

Kapala rules in favor of Blagojevich’s bill, Cavel closes but appeals in 7th Federal Circuit Court of Appeals..

July 19 2007

Cavel allowed to stay open during appeal.

Sept. 21, 2007

7th Circuit Court three-judge panel upholds the bill.

Future

Cavel has the option to ask a three-judge appellate panel to reconsider its ruling, or ask the full court to take on the case.
