Volleyball looks for southern comfort in Texas

Coming off a tough loss to DePaul, the NIU volleyball team looks for some southern comfort this weekend when they head to Texas to compete in the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Invitational.
The Huskies’ (3-5) weekend starts off today with a 4 p.m. match against Texas Pan-American (2-9).
Saturday, NIU plays a double-header with a 10 a.m. match against host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-6) and, in what figures to be its toughest match, a 4:30 p.m. start time against San Diego State (4-2).
“Saturday will be a tough day for us, playing two matches,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said. “Our biggest goal is to take care of our side of the ball.”
San Diego State is led by sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Darnall who is averaging 3.8 kills per game and is second on the team with 3.4 digs per game.
The Huskies have two players coming off career games against DePaul in senior Laura Baetzel and freshman Dani D’Ambrose.
Baetzel hit for 26 kills, while D’Ambrose went for 21.
“Dani was one of the positives in that match,” Gooden said. “She does a lot of things well for us and helps make us deeper.”
