Summer Movies: Pirates of the Caribbean
August 28, 2007
With even more sword fighting, backstabbing and a swashbuckling Keira Knightly as the new Pirate Queen, the finale of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, At World’s End, proved to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters this year.
Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner and the rest of the Black Pearl pirates unite to save Captain Jack Sparrow from the ill fate of Davy Jones’ locker. Once Sparrow is freed, the crew must work to reunite the nine pirate lords of the Brethren Court and free Calypso the sea goddess from her human form in order to save the world of piracy from the East India Trading Company…
If it seems as if there is a lot going on, there is. With all the high-powered action and constant tussles over alliances, it is often hard to understand who is on what side or even what they are fighting for. And if you haven’t seen either of the first two movies don’t even bother trying to understand because you won’t.
As a trilogy, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies boast an inventive pirate phenomena that showcases the genius behind writers, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, and director, Gore Verbinski.
It is amazing to imagine all of the creativity that went into developing a 10 minute them park ride into three major blockbusters.
However, the only complaint to be found is At World’s End doesn’t stand well alone and works off the other two movies in order to make sense.
Regardless, if you’re looking for action, adventure and don’t mind sitting for almost three hours, the final chapter to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is worth a watch—just watch the first two before.
