Huskie volleyball to host Illinois State

By Andy Pruski

After falling in their first two matches during the NIU Invitational last week, the Huskies volleyball team ended on a high note with a three-game sweep over Western Illinois.

NIU will hope to build on that win tonight when the Huskies (1-2) host Illinois State University (2-1) at 7 p.m. on Victor E. Court.

Mandi Caputo was the floor leader against WIU, racking up 41 assists and 10 digs in the sweep. Caputo will need to continue playing at that level for the Huskies to answer ISU’s stacked offense.

The Redbirds are led by junior outside hitter M.C. Richmond and sophomore Peggy Riessen.

The duo are off to a fast start, already recording career highs in kills during their second match this season. Richmond went for 23 kills in the match, while Riessen added 18.

NIU has its own pair of offensive weapons in Laura Baetzel and Irene Johnson. The two led NIU in its victory over WIU with Baetzel recording 15 kills while Johnson reached 12.
