The Spot brings urban style to town

DeKALB | Students can find unique apparel in more than just one place now.

In March of 2007, the owners of Unique Apparel, located at 311 E. Lincoln Highway, opened The Spot, located at 866 W. Lincoln Highway.

Unique Apparel got its name by being the first store in DeKalb to offer a more urban style of clothing.

“A lot of students went to Unique Apparel and a lot of them wanted a store closer [to campus],” said RaMona Watton Fykes, owner of Unique Apparel and The Spot.

That’s how we got the name, The Spot, because we brought the store to the students, Fykes said.

The Spot, along with Unique Apparel, offers name brand clothing like Baby Phat, Phat Farm, Ecko Red and RocaWear, just to name a few. Both stores carry a variety of things, such as clothing and shoes for both men and women, jewelry and even fake grills for your teeth. Along with clothing and jewelry, The Spot also sells accessories like baseball caps, purses and sunglasses.

“We’re trying to target people in high school to people in their 30s, depending on what their style is,” Fykes said.

“I like the store because it has inexpensive clothes and shoes,” said Anthony Figueroa, a customer at The Spot. “It’s a very good store, and more people are going to be coming because of the hip-hop scene.”

Because of the target demographic of The Spot, the prices are reasonable for the name brands that are being sold there. For instance, one sweatsuit from Riflessi was on sale for $25, certain sunglasses were being sold for seven dollars and bellybutton rings were being sold for $11.50.

The Spot, even though small compared to bigger stores in the area, has a lot to offer to people who shop there.

“We’re trying to bring more urban clothing to college students,” said Shameka, an employee of The Spot.
