Man dies after home invasion early Friday morning

DeKalb | A pursuit by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office ended in the shooting of a suspect Friday.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary/home invasion at 8:12 a.m. Friday in the area of University Road.
Officers arrived on the scene at approximately 8:20 a.m. and the suspect’s vehicle tried to ram a deputy’s squad. Officers pursued the vehicle and used tire deflation devices to flatten the tires on the passenger side. The pursuit ended at Conserv FS dealership at Willrett Road at approximately 8:30 a.m.
One suspect, Thomas Bagley, 38, of Rockford, surrendered to police and was taken into custody. The second suspect, James R. Cofield, 39, of Rockford, refused to exit the vehicle and was armed with a rifle. During the process of negotiation, Cofield leveled his weapon at officers and was shot.
Police and ambulance personnel treated Cofield and was he pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dennis Miller at 11 a.m.
It was confirmed the vehicle the suspects were driving was stolen. Both suspects were currently on parole and had criminal histories.
The state police are currently investigating the shooting part of this incident.
