Greek organizations celebrate community with Greek Week

DeKALB | Greek members from all four councils are hosting a week of activities in celebration of Greek Week today through Saturday.

“Greek Week is a joint effort to raise community awareness about the many things Greek life has to offer,” said Kristen Larson, an Alpha Omicron Pi member and College Panhellenic Council representative.

The kick-off barbecue planned for today in Central Park is cancelled, due to weather concerns.

Tuesday, Greeks will express appreciation for faculty members. Each grouping of chapters is assigned a college and will be in charge of purchasing or making a gift for the faculty of that college.

“This is our way of giving back to the university in a positive and united way,” Larson said.

Wednesday, the “Outstanding Greek” awards ceremony will be held in the Holmes Student Center Sky Room at 7 p.m. Each house has nominated a person for the award, and the winners will be selected on criteria such as grade point average and campus and community involvement.

Fraternity and sorority houses will play dodgeball at the Chick Evans Field House at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Friday, the Eighth Annual Sigma Lambda Gamma Miss Latina cultural pageant will be at Altgeld Hall at 7 p.m.

“The pageant emphasizes and beautifies the role of Latina women,” said Lissete Aguirre, a Sigma Lambda Gamma member and pageant coordinator.

In addition to bonding with members of other councils, Greeks will also participate in NIU Cares Day on Saturday.

“We hope this year’s Greek Week will get more of the campus involved in helping out the university and appreciating the diversity present in all of the different Greek chapters here at NIU,” Larson said.
