University Police blotter

The following was taken directly from area police and fire department records, or from DeKalb County court records. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

DeKALB | Three people were arrested as they tried to elude police Monday at 9:16 p.m.

Ulrick R. Jackson, 18 of Sycamore and two passengers, a 17-year-old DeKalb minor and Nicholas F. Schofield, 18, of Sycamore, were attempting to flee from police after they sent a minor into Sullivan’s Foods, in an effort to steal alcohol.

“This was observed by a witness who called the police,” said Sgt. Wes Hoadley of the DeKalb Police Department. “The guy inside took off running on foot, but was apprehended shortly after because he was intoxicated.”

When the individuals in the car saw police coming, they drove away. The vehicle struck the east-side curb of the 1300 block of S. 7th Street before traveling over the pavement. The driver exited the moving vehicle and fled.

“They hit the curb and the vehicle became inoperable,” Hoadley said. “They took off on foot. One was apprehended on the scene and the other two guys gave up the third guy.”

The unoccupied vehicle traveled through the yard of 1307 S. 7th St. and crossed into the yard of 626 Spring Ave., where it stopped against a shed.

At the station, Jackson and the DeKalb minor said Schofield was involved and initially denied that Jackson was the driver.

“Ulrick and the DeKalb minor said Schofield was driving, but eventually told the truth,” Hoadley said. “They called Schofield and he came in and pretty much told the truth.”

All three passengers were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing a peace officer. Police also charged Jackson with fleeing/eluding a peace officer, failure to give information after striking property, failure to reduce speed, disobeying a peace officer, reckless driving, failure to signal, disobeying a stop sign, leaving a motor vehicle unattended and driving without a license.

Robbery

Police charged Melvin L. Harper, 42, with the robbery of Bockman’s Amoco, 705 E. Lincoln Highway.

Around 9:30 a.m. March 11, a subject entered the gas station and asked for change for a quarter. When the attendant opened the register, the offender leapt over the counter and grabbed cash out of the drawer. The offender fled east on foot.

Police identified the offender through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System. The robber left his prints on a glass surface inside the gas station.

The offender was already in the DeKalb County Jail on traffic charges when police learned his identity. His bond was set at $50,000.
