Roy hopes for yet another trophy

NIU’s men’s soccer team will be hunting in Quincy, Illinois this weekend.

However, the prize will be a second straight tournament title as the Huskies go for the kill in the Quincy College/Harris Allied Soccer Bowl II.

NIU is coming off a triumph at the Panther Invitational at Eastern Illinois University.

The hunt begins tonight when the Huskies take on the Michigan State Spartans at 6:00 p.m.

MSU (3-4-1) is led by Sean Nemnich, who leads the Spartans with four goals, and Spartan assist leader Jon Petoskey.

“They have an extremely quick line, and they are very aggressive,” Roy said. “It should be an exciting match, we just have to stay focused.”

Huskie goalie Brad Nordeng will start the match against Michigan State. Roy will replace Nordeng with Brian Hecht at Sunday’s game against Missouri-Kansas City.

“Brad needed some rest, and it was good for Brian to get some experience in the net (last week),” Roy said.

The winner of the NIU/MSU game will then have to play the winner of the Quincy College/Arkansas-Little Rock match on Sunday.

“I believe that Quincy is the favorite in the tournament. They’ve got the home field advantage and they have been very successful as of late,” said Roy. “We just need to relax and stay focused.”
