Newman Center burglarized

DeKALB | Early Easter Sunday morning, the Newman Catholic Student Center received a reminder of “why Christ came into the world,” said Maria Alderson, director of adult education for the Newman Center.

A burglary occurred between midnight and 7:23 a.m., said DeKalb Police Sgt. Jason Leverton. He said the suspect broke a stained glass window to enter the church and stole money out a gift shop cash register.

The northeast corner of the Newman Center chapel had large pieces of blue stained glass beneath a missing pane.

“It must have been a painful way to get in,” said Father Addison Hart, associate pastor at the Newman Center. He said the damage was “more destruction than actual burglary,” since the only cash kept in the church is for bookstore use.

There aren’t any suspects yet, but there is surveillance video, Leverton said.

Just like the break-in that occurred a few months ago, the burglars were caught on videotape, detectives were dusting for prints and repairs will be fairly simple, aside from the window itself, Hart said.

For parishioners, Hart’s Easter homily to them was “a sobering reminder” of how, even on Easter Sunday, evil still lurks in the world.

“This is why the Gospel of Christ is so important,” Hart said.
