Police investigating possible arson
March 7, 2007
UPDATE as of 4:45 p.m. on Mar. 7
According to a Sycamore Police Department press release, Bridget A. DeCleene, 21, of Aurora, died as a result of two gunshot wounds to the head. Robert G. Bevington, 63, of Sycamore, died as a result of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A rifle was recovered in close proximity to Bevington.
DeKalb County coronor Dennis Miller said it is believed Bevington shot DeCleene, set the house on fire and then shot himself.
Fire investigators have determined that the fire was apparently set intentionally, as signs of an accelerant were found inside the structure.
Sycamore Police Chief Don Thomas said it is believed the house and unoccupied vehicle parked in front of the house – which was owned by Bevinton – to be two separate fires.
“No one can remember the last time there was a murder suicide in Sycamore,” Thomas said. “In the record system we have now, there is no record of a murder suicide. The last murder was Aug. 1991.”
SYCAMORE | Robert G. Bevington, 63, of Sycamore and Bridget A. DeCleene, 21, of Aurora were pronounced dead Monday at the scene of a structure fire that occurred early Sunday morning at 365 South Ave. in Sycamore.
Sycamore Police Chief Don Thomas said the case is now being called a homicide/arson investigation from a previous label of a fire.
“We now believe [the fire] to be deliberately set,” Thomas said. “We are still investigating the cause of the fire and circumstances of death.”
Early Sunday morning, Sycamore fire and police responded to a vehicle and structure fire at the location. Although previously unidentified, Dave Jacobson, DeKalb County chief deputy coroner, said X-rays and examinations were used to identify the bodies after they were recovered.
The house was occupied by Bevington and Thomas said the unoccupied vehicle parked in front of the house which was also on fire belonged to Bevington.
Thomas said Bevington and DeCleene were “good friends, but not related.”
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, and more information will be known afterward, Thomas said.
