DeKALB | DeKalb police arrested a 15-year-old Cortland resident for a stabbing that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the 1000 block of S. 4th St.
Both the victim and the suspect have gang affiliations, police say. Police Chief Bill Feithen does not believe gang retaliation is expected.
“Our information is: Since this was on an individual level, we don’t expect this to grow into a larger concern,” Feithen said.
According to the DeKalb Police Department, the victim parked in a driveway, exited his vehicle and confronted the suspect, who was on the sidewalk. The 13 stab wounds were inflicted on the head, neck, hand and back of the 23-year-old victim. After the incident, the suspect fled south on 4th St.
The victim was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital and was released, police say.
The juvenile suspect was taken into custody at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday at his residence. He is currently being held in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center. The State’s Attorney’s Office is expected to prosecute the juvenile as an adult.
The suspect was charged with attempted murder, armed violence and two counts of aggravated battery, as stated in a DeKalb Police Department press release. The charges for attempted murder and armed violence are both Class X felonies. These felonies are punishable by six to 30 years in the penitentiary and a fine of $25,000. Aggravated battery is a Class 3 Felony and is punishable by two to five years in the penitentiary and also holds a fine of $25,000.
DeKalb police are still investigating the case.
“We’re continuing to follow up as we do on these types of cases,” Feithen said. “We’ll interview people and re-interview people to tie up loose ends.”
While the police do not have the weapon, Feithen said the witnesses described the knife as five to eight inches long.
“I’ve heard it described as being a folding knife and a kitchen knife,” Feithen said.
