Huskies face best in MAC West

DeKALB | The NIU men’s basketball team saved the best for last.

With four games remaining in the regular season, the Huskies host MAC West-leading Toledo tonight at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

The Rockets have been on a tear through the conference. With two more wins, Toledo would sweep its MAC West schedule, defeating every team twice along the way.

One of the opponents to have already felt Toledo’s wrath is NIU. On Jan. 21, Toledo (14-11 overall, 10-2 MAC) forced the Huskies (6-19, 3-9) to commit a season-high 33 turnovers and won the game at Toledo by 16.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to play them again,” NIU head coach Rob Judson said. “The team since the beginning of the year has practiced eagerly.”

Since then, NIU has cut down on turnovers and has improved three-point shooting. Over a six-game stretch, the Huskies are shooting 44.7 percent from beyond the arc and have made at least five three-pointers in each game during that span.

“Our selectivity has improved on threes,” Judson said.

Zach Pancratz has been one of the reasons for the improved three-point shooting. The junior guard is shooting 50 percent from downtown the past six games, and has converted on least one three in each game.

The Rockets aren’t short on offense, either. Toledo ranks fourth in the MAC in scoring offense, dropping 68.7 points per game, and has three players ranked in the top 15 in scoring in the conference.

Senior guard Keonta Howell ranks fifth in scoring with 15.1 points per game, senior guard Justin Ingram ranks seventh with 14.9 and senior forward Florentino Valencia ranks 15th with 13.1. Valencia also ranks first in field goal percentage, shooting 65.5 percent from the field.

Both teams lost their respective ESPN Bracket Buster competitions this past weekend in close matches. NIU fell to University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 82-76, while Toledo lost to Old Dominion 73-70.
