NIU burns Toledo from beyond the arc

DeKALB | Though statistics show the NIU women’s basketball team is a constant threat from the 3-point line, no one could have expected the Huskies to do what they did in the first half Wednesday against Toledo.

During a five-minute stretch, NIU set fire to the Convocation Center, connecting on nine field goals, seven of which came from beyond the arc.

NIU freshman guard Kylie York was key during the stretch, hitting a trio of 3-pointers.

“That was a huge run for us,” York said. “I think that was the stretch that opened up the game. It was just an amazing run; everyone was hitting shots and finding the open player.”

Whitney Lowe, who finished with six points, capped off the run with her second three of the game.

The Huskies turned a 7-11 deficit to a 33-21 lead by the time the smoke cleared.

“We wanted to try and put them away early,” guard Stephanie Raymond said. “It was just a matter of finding the open people at the right time.”

As the Rockets mounted a comeback, Toledo had a chance to tie, but a 3-point attempt was blocked by sophomore guard Jessie Wilcox.

NIU wasn’t done with the threes yet, as it hit five more in the second half, ending the game 13-28 from beyond the arc.

NIU’s thirteen makes from 3-point range is a season high for the Huskies, breaking their previous best of 12 against Illinois State opening night.

Raymond also set a season high, hitting five threes. She finished 5 for 7 from long range and scored 30 points, tying her season-best performance.

The Huskies did cool off in the second half, opening the door for Toledo, which went on a 17-2 run to get back in the game.

Though the 3-pointer was able to lift the Huskies, it nearly derailed them in the second half.Despite perhaps falling in love with the three at times, NIU head coach Carol Owens was not upset with any of the shots her team took.

“All year we’ve hit the threes, and in the first half we showed that,” Owens said. “All the shots we took were good shots.”
