No day of rest for wrestling

DeKALB | If you’re on the NIU wrestling team, there’s no such thing as Thanksgiving, Christmas or spring break and unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a Super Bowl party.

NIU’s grapplers will take their show on the road to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the University of Northern Iowa and Old Dominion University at noon on Sunday, Feb. 4 – Super Sunday. The meet starts at noon and could end anywhere from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Many of the wrestlers are pushing coach Dave Grant to stop at a restaurant on the way home to watch the Super Bowl, but the decision is still up in the air.

Northern Iowa is ranked in the top 25 in three out of five national polls and will be the fourth nationally ranked opponent for the Huskies this year. ODU has come close to breaking into the national spotlight several times this season, but hasn’t managed to get over the hump. If the Huskies can pull out victories against both teams, they will once again have a good shot at cracking the top 25.

NIU will need more than just its nationally ranked competitors – Mike Grimes, Johnny Galloway, Duke Burk and Pat Castillo – to perform well in order to win.

“We need to wrestle tough from top to bottom,” NIU head coach Dave Grant said. “Every weight class is as important as the other.”

NIU’s Johnny Galloway will try to improve on his No. 9 spot in the national rankings when he faces UNI’s Nick Baima, the fifth-best wrestler in the 165-lb. class. Galloway lost to Baima in triple overtime earlier in the year at the Kaufman/Brand Open in Omaha, Neb.
