Huskie ‘D’ must be ready for Miami University

DeKALB | Last Tuesday, the NIU women’s basketball team strung two solid halves together to beat Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.

Saturday, it will attempt to string two solid games together when it takes on Miami University at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center, marking its first home game in two weeks.

The Huskies (14-6, 5-3) will look to slow down the offense of the Redhawks (11-10 5-3), which is leading the MAC in scoring, putting up just shy of 75 points per game.

“We want to contain them,” NIU coach Carol Owens said. “They do a great job in transition and we need to slow down their guards.”

Miami’s bread and butter is its guards, junior Amanda Jackson and sophomore Jenna Schone. Jackson is averaging 17 points per game while picking the pockets of opposing offenses at the rate of three steals per game. Schone is scoring 11 points a contest, while dishing out five assists.

Ball control will be critical for NIU, as Miami creates over 10 turnovers a game on average.

“We are going to need to take care of the ball,” Owens said. “If we do the things we need to do we’ll be fine.”

NIU has some momentum on its side. The Huskies have won two games in a row on the road, and are glad to be returning to DeKalb.

“It’s going to be good to be home,” Owens said.
