Haunted houses offer chilling thrill
October 28, 1993
What would Halloween be without the excitement and fear of entering a haunted house?
This year, there are two haunted houses in town to enter at your own risk. One of these is located in Sycamore across from the Court House on State Street. The other is located in downtown DeKalb at the Hopkins Park Shelter House on Sycamore Road.
The haunted house in Sycamore is open 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and after the end of the Sycamore “Pumpkinfest” parade on Sunday. Admission to this house is $3.00. It is sponsored by the Sycamore Junior Chamber of Commerce and by the WDKB radio station.
The DeKalb haunted house is open from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, between 4 to 6 p.m., small children will have the opportunity to go through the house with the lights on so it’s not as scary.
This house is sponsored by Kishwaukee Kiwanis and by WDEK radio station. Regular admission is $4.00.
David Emanuelson, director of the DeKalb house, said there are six rooms in the house. Lambda Chi Alpha, Circle K and the DeKalb High School sophomore basketball team each haunt their own rooms. The other three rooms are done by adult members of the Kishwaukee group. The house can take anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes to go through.
“It’s a successful event and a fun time each year,” Siebrasse said. “Everyone should come out and have a good time at this unusual event that only occurs once a year.”
Chuck Siebrasse, chairman of the haunted house, said thrill-seekers can expect the house to be progressively scarier during the Halloween weekend.
He said everyone working the house will be more comfortable with what they must do to scare people.
Siebrasse said all the money raised at this house will go back to completing community projects. This year’s goal is to raise enough money to build a bike path connecting Sycamore and DeKalb.
Diane Yunek, aid to Sycamore’s haunted house chairman Mike West, said this house has about 4 to 5 rooms in it. There are also mazes and different creatures in the walls of the house to add to the excitement.
