New Mexican restaurant to open on Lincoln Highway

DeKALB | The ghost-town appearance of Lincoln Highway west of Annie Glidden Road is on its way out.

With the addition of a Long John Silver’s and a Kentucky Fried Chicken at 1115 W. Lincoln Highway, Pizza Pros’ impending move to the old Husky Grill and Sports Bar location at 1205 W. Lincoln Highway, and Blackstone Restaurant, 1262 W. Lincoln Highway, replacing Spring Garden, it looks as though dining choices are shaping up in this dilapidated section of town.

The most recent addition, Taqueria La Palma, is taking up residence in the old Ditto’s building, 1180 W. Lincoln Highway.

The cuisine will feature moderately priced traditional Mexican food and will have both a drive-thru and the capacity to sit down and dine inside, said Lazaro Castro, owner of Taqueria La Palma.

Castro said he is not concerned about the presence of several other Mexican restaurants in the area and is not afraid of competition.

“I think if they like the food, they’ll come back,” he said.

Castro purchased the property earlier this month and plans to open within the next couple of weeks. The exact date has not yet been set.

At least one student is excited about a new restaurant opening in the area.

“I think it’s great because I can walk to it and we don’t have any really good Mexican places here,” said Christina Schlueter, a senior marketing major and resident of Stadium View II apartments, 1315 W. Lincoln Highway. “There can never be enough Mexican restaurants.”
