Talking food and Flavor Flav with wrestler Galloway
January 24, 2007
DeKALB | Ranked as high as No. 10 nationally, wrestler Johnny Galloway has made the most of his senior year at NIU.
After defeating University of Ohio’s best wrestler over the weekend, the Iowa native improved his record to 11-1 and has helped the NIU wrestling team to a perfect 2-0 start in the MAC.
Before traveling to Kent State for a conference showdown Friday night, Galloway talked to the Star about everything from McDonald’s to being — Shhh! — a Colts fan.
Northern Star: Being a senior, what has been your favorite part about wrestling at NIU?
Johnny Galloway: Just being around my teammates, coaches and just being in the organization. It’s nice being around people with the same interests.
NS: Johnny Galloway is known as the guy on the team who…
JG: Is a leader and a person that people look up to. I try and help out the freshmen as much as possible with everything from wrestling to time management.
NS: What’s your favorite thing to do off the mats?
JG: Eat.
NS: What’s your favorite food?
JG: A No. 9 [10-piece chicken nugget meal] at McDonald’s with hot mustard and honey sauce, supersized, with a Hi-C Orange, and an extra cheeseburger.
NS: Wow, how often do you get that?
JG: Sorry, I can’t tell you that information because my coach will kill me.
NS: Being from Iowa, does that make you a Bears fan, or what?
JG: No, I’ve actually been a Colts fan since sixth grade.
NS: A Colts fan? What’s your prediction for the Super Bowl?
JG: It’ll be a good game. Grossman and Manning will both play well. I say 34-24 Colts.
NS: Has anyone on the team been giving you a hard time for being a Colts fan?
JG: Yeah, mainly Dave Herrera and Chad Vandiver. They’re die-hard Bears fans, so they’ve just been doing a little talking lately.
NS: Which celebrity are you most like?
JG: That’s a tough one. I’d say Flavor Flav.
NS: Nice. What characteristics do you share with him?
JG: (Laughs) Well, we are both romantic and have good eating habits.
