Student killed in crash

Amy Weber’s first step in realizing her goals was landing a job at the Holmes Student Center Hotel.

She hoped to someday own a hotel in Hawaii, where three of her loves – swimming, water and the beach – would all be easily accessible.

The freshman hospitality administration major died early Sunday in a two-vehicle crash during snowy weather in Genoa.

A Genoa Police Department press release said the investigation thus far has indicated that Weber, 19, was the front-seat passenger in an eastbound 1996 Chrysler Cirrus on Route 72 when a 2006 Hyundai crossed the center line and collided “nearly head-on” with the Cirrus at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Preliminary indications are that the severe weather was the primary cause of the accident. Both Christina Scheuermann, the 32-year-old driver of the Hyundai, and Loretta Scholle, the 19-year-old driver of the Chrysler, were charged with driving too fast for conditions.

Amy’s mother, Lynn Weber, said the family frequently vacationed in Florida and was there Amy came up with her dream.

“She loved the beach and the water, and she had always wanted to go to Hawaii,” Lynn said. “She was swimming since she was six.”

Lynn, who described Amy as fun-loving and energetic, said Amy had a “good group of friends” from DeKalb High School, from which Amy graduated in 2006.

Amy was on the DeKalb High School swim team and a member of the DeKalb County swim team.

Brian Bickner, senior coach of the county team, said the team heard the news at a swim meet on Sunday.

“It is a tremendous loss to lose someone so fun-loving at such a young age,” Bickner said.
