Volunteers in high demand

By Colin Leicht

DeKALB | The Student Involvement and Leadership Development office will host a meeting tonight discussing upcoming volunteer events.

The main topics at the meeting, which will take place at 8 p.m. in the Campus Life Building, Room 100, will focus on service opportunities for organization members and students around the community.

Although many students may be familiar with some local opportunities, such as Hope Haven or Safe Passage, upcoming events will focus on expanding involvement.

“There are so many other places that need volunteers,” said Camyle Tate, assistant director of volunteer relations for the SILD office. Tate said all who are interested may attend, and members of more than 200 organizations on campus will get community service credit simply for attending.

Attendees at the meeting are welcome to provide input for a volunteer fair Jan. 25, 2007, at which members of local organizations and nonprofit groups will provide information on volunteering.

There also will be discussion regarding Big Volunteer Day on April 14, 2007, a community service the office plans to sponsor each

semester.
