Cross country club slips, falls and settles for 19th

NIU’s track/cross-country club recently participated in the Loyola Lakefront Cross-Country Invitational at Montrose Harbor in Chicago.

Out of the 30 Division I, II, and III schools that participated in the meet, NIU finished 19th overall. The Huskies finished eighth out of 13 Division I teams, edging out Wisconsin-Green Bay, who is a member of the Mid-Continent Conference.

Coach Dan Jacobson said, “They (Wisconsin-Green Bay) have been a rival of ours for a while.”

Mitch Rubenstein led the team in the five-mile race, finishing with a time of 27:32 that was good enough for 82nd out of 250 runners.

Gary Randles finished 99th with a time of 28:01. Kevin Temple followed Randles with a time of 28:06, followed by Jacobson, and Matt Rinenbach.

Jacobson was pleased with how the Huskies fared in the meet.

Jacobson said, “Some of the top teams in the nation were at the meet, and considering our background, we ran very well.”

The NIU track club is still looking for potential members. Anyone who is interested in running with the Huskies should contact Dan Jacobson at 758-8090.
