Women’s basketball gets wakeup call

DeKALB | The Huskies women’s basketball team received a wake up call in its second game of the season against Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis.

Defending their home court, the Huskies couldn’t shake the Jaguars, who pulled away in the final minute to win 73-67.

“It’s good to face this kind of team early,” NIU head coach Carol Owens said. “We showed some good things, but we need to learn to move more and it’s better we find out sooner than later.”

IUPUI (1-0) had an answer for every NIU basket late in the game and closed the door with solid free throw shooting, going seven for eight in the final minute.

NIU (1-1) looked ready to make a run in the fourth when a jump shot by Whitney Lowe put them up 61-57 with less than five minutes to play.

From there, however, the Jaguars went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead for good.

“It all goes back to making stops,” Stephanie Raymond said. “It all depends on defense and we didn’t make the stops when we needed to.”

Raymond led all scorers with 27 points and shot eight of 13 from the field. But it wasn’t that easy of a night for the senior, as she had constant harrassment from a tough Jaguar defense.

“We wanted to limit the amount of touches that [Raymond] got,” IUPUI head coach Shann Hart said. “We knew how much of a threat she was.”

Kristin Wiener and Lowe were the only other Huskies in double-digit scoring with 14 and 12, respectively. Lowe also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Jaguars, on the other hand, had all five of their starters reach double digits, with Tanika Mays’ 17 points leading the way. Plus, the team’s starters scored all but one of the team’s points.
