Men’s soccer, Zimka getting recognition

DeKALB | After winning the MAC West title, the nation can‘t get enough of the NIU men’s soccer team.

Huskies goalkeeper Joe Zimka was nominated to College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week for the second time this season.

Zimka had two shutouts in the MAC tournament.

“Joe has had a good year and is playing well at the moment,” said NIU head coach Steve Simmons. “His penalty save against Akron was a big play that turned the momentum of the game and a good reason for his selection.”

The Huskies got more good news as a team when they finished the season ranked No. 26 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, No. 19 by College Soccer News and third in the Great Lakes Top 10 behind Indiana and Notre Dame.

Expectations

NIU football was picked to win the MAC title in the pre-season, but the exact opposite has happened.

NIU was eliminated from MAC West title contention after losing to Toledo Tuesday night.

With two games remaining, the Huskies now have to play spoiler in the MAC West.

Fifth at the championships

After missing the top ten in eight of nine tournaments, the NIU men’s golf team had a quick turnaround at the Big East/MAC Challenge last Saturday.

The Huskies finished the tournament with an overall score of 882 and finished fifth.

Junior Zach Jecklin led the team under par tally with 68.

“It was a good way to end the [fall season],” John Cleary said. “The guys will have a nice break after a long fall and it’ll be good for them to put the clubs away and come back fresh in February.”
