DALTON, Ga. | A single-engine plane crashed in north Georgia on Monday, killing a Sycamore man who was the only person on board, officials said.

Charlie Lainge, 52, died from multiple injuries, Coroner Bobbie Dixon said.

The Lancair plane was registered to Scott Carlson of Sycamore, said Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The aircraft was headed from DeKalb to Brooksville, Fla., when the pilot contacted Dalton Municipal Airport to report engine problems at about 12:30 p.m., Bergen said.

The plane crashed about 20 minutes after the distress call at the intersection of Georgia highways 52 and 286, about five miles east of Dalton, according to Kevin Day, shift supervisor for the Whitfield County 911 center.

No one on the ground was injured, he said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
