Volleyball fine-tuning this weekend

DeKALB | The NIU women’s volleyball team will look to do some fine-tuning this weekend as they face the bottom two teams in the MAC, Akron and Buffalo.

Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday night at Victor E. Court.

The games are also the team’s final two matches of the regular season, with the first round of the MAC tournament starting Tuesday.

“Our main thing to work on is team play,” said coach Ray Gooden. “The emphasis is on playing well together and playing aggressively. With it being the last two games, hopefully the girls will come out and play hard for each other.”

Akron holds a 7-21 record, including 1-13 in the MAC and is led offensively by the trio of Molly Rutledge, Jennifer Stewart and Brionna Patterson, all of whom average more than three kills a game.

While only holding a 3-11 conference record, Buffalo is 14-17 overall. They are led by senior Jenna Mape, who averages 3.47 kills per game.

The Huskies are looking to gain some momentum heading into the tournament after struggling in their last two matches. After losing to Western Michigan, they needed five games to beat Miami-Ohio.

During the match against the Redhawks, outside hitter Irene Johnson went down with an upper body injury. According to Gooden, she is completely healthy and will be good to go for this weekend’s matches.

Johnson is averaging a little under two kills a game and her .238 clip is good enough for second on the team.
