Star chats up freshman Pat McLemore
November 15, 2006
DeKALB | As a true freshman, Pat McLemore is enjoying his first year of college. After compiling a 149-10 career high school record, he made his college debut by taking first place in the 141-pound weight class over the weekend at the Pointer Open in Stevens Point, Wis.
McLemore has his goals set high for the remainder of the season and his career. The Star got a chance to catch up with McLemore to talk about everything from his Ohio roots to his dance routine from Starsky & Hutch.
Northern Star: You had to beat a teammate over the weekend to win the title. Was that weird for you?
Pat McLemore: Yeah, it was. We have so many good wrestlers on our team. Any day someone else can win. I figured I’d have to wrestle a teammate so I just approached it as a normal match.
NS: What would it mean for you to be an NCAA qualifier as a freshman?
PM: It’s definitely a goal of mine. It would be an amazing feeling and really great for our team. It would bode well for the future as well.
NS: Being a freshman and being far from home, how has DeKalb treated you so far?
PM: I love it. It’s beautiful; it’s kind of like a mini-city. Almost like a mini-Cleveland, close to where I’m from.
NS: Being close to Cleveland, does that make you an Indians, Browns or Cavs fan?
PM: I’m a pretty big Cavs fan. Lebron is pretty amazing.
NS: You know, the central division might come down to the Bulls and Cavs…what do think will happen there?
PM: I think the Cavs will do better. If last week’s win over the Bulls is any indication, the Cavs shouldn’t have a problem. I’m a pretty big Ohio State fan too. They’ll beat Michigan this weekend.
NS: Have the guys on the team made you feel pretty comfortable, seeing that you’re so far from home?
PM: Yeah, me and a lot of the other freshman on the team have a good time. We like to sing and dance to Starsky & Hutch in the dorms.
NS: How did that come along?
PM: We just kept watching it and eventually started dancing with it.
NS: Who’s your favorite actor?
PM: Will Ferrell.
NS: What’s your favorite movie and quote of his?
PM: Either “Anchorman” or “Talladega Nights.” And “shake and bake” is my favorite quote.
NS: Why’s that?
PM: Because when I wrestle, I shake and bake.
