Inaugural season ending fast

Their first season is coming to a quick end for the women’s soccer team as they take on Northeast Missouri State University and Wright State University this weekend.

NIU (6-9) will play its last home game this afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Huskie Soccer Field when they take on Northeast Missouri (4-9).

“They have a losing record right now and we need to capitalize and take advantage of being at home,” said head coach Frank Horvat.

Missouri is a division II team and should not be a problem for the Huskies, but no team can be taken for granted.

“We really need to look for our target people and play a lot of wing attacks,” Horvat said.

If the Huskies use this tactic, they should come out on top this afternoon because that is where NIU builds their scoring opportunities.

NIU will be targeting Northeast Missouri’s junior Stephanie Barrowclough who leads the team with 12 points. She boasts five goals on the season and has two assists.

Along with Barrowclough, NIU will likely target freshman standout Trishia Harting who has 11 points off five goals and one assist.

Sunday the Huskies travel to Wright State for an afternoon match to end their first NCAA season. Wright State is an established ball club who has been around for a number of years.

If NIU comes away with both games this weekend, it would have a lasting effect on how the season is evaluated.

“I think everybody would be more positive by the way (the season) ended,” Horvat said. “Being 8-9 is a lot better than 7-10 or 6-11.”

The team’s goal for the season has been to finish at or above the .500 mark. By winning these two games, it would put the Huskies just one win short of their goal.

Horvat is hoping to have his starting lineup healthy enough to start both games this weekend, which would be a change from weeks past.

“I’m expecting to start all of my starters. I’m hoping to play everybody both games,” Horvat said.
