Libero grabbing national attention

DeKALB | With the season getting close to the end and the NIU volleyball team playing well, it’s only fitting for the Huskies to receive national attention at some point.

Garrett Wolfe is no longer the only reason the nation knows of NIU.

Senior libero Gina Guide was named the National Volleyball Player of the Week by Collegiate Volleyball Update, cvu.com, for her play over the weekend. The senior also was named MAC West Player of the Week.

She excelled in her last two games, racking up 89 digs to help her team secure two big road victories over Toledo and Ball State.

“We are excited about what Gina accomplished last week and we are thankful that cvu.com was able to recognize that as well,” NIU head coach Ray Gooden said.

Guide is also 24 digs away from 2,000 in her career. The libero already holds the all-time NIU record.

Three to the HallThree former Huskie players will be inducted into the NIU Hall of Fame Friday, Oct. 20, in the Duke Ellington Ballroom.

Laurie Miller (Softball, 1982-85), Jarod Schroedor (Swimming, 1991-95) and Hollis Thomas (Football, 1992-95) will join a list of more than 30 NIU student athletes.

The reception is at 6 p.m., followed by the Hall of Fame roll call at 7 p.m. The induction ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m.

The bronze medalComing off its first-place finish at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational two weeks ago, the NIU cross country team hoped to keep the streak rolling.

The Huskies finished third this past Saturday at the Parkside invitational in Kenosha, Wis.

Junior Mia Supanich-Winter led the way with an eighth-place finish.

“We’re heading in the right direction,” NIU assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey said. “We’re going to taper off, and by the time conference rolls around, we should feel fresh and give us that needed boost.”

Next up for the Huskies: The MAC championships in Buffalo, NY on October 28.
