Workshop addresses law school quandaries
October 24, 2006
DeKALB | NIU Career Services and the NIU College of Law’s office of admissions are teaming up for “Selecting and Applying to Law School,” a free workshop open to all students at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Campus Life Building, Room 100.
Speakers include graduate assistants and law students Laura Mruk, Mark Connolly and Robert Jenkins.
Topics will cover deciding whether or not to attend law school, researching and selecting a school, preparing for and taking the Law School Admission Test, writing a personal statement, the law school application process, tips for a successful first year and a question and answer session. The workshop will last about an hour.
Though Career Services and the College of Law held the law workshops for about seven years, information is updated each year, said Mruk, a second-year law student.
“Law school is a really important decision, and as a lot of people are aware, it’s a lot of work,” Mruk said.
“It’s a great choice, but it’s something that you really have to think about. We’re really just trying to help students become aware of their options and really determine the best choice for them.”
Connolly, a second-year law student, said the workshop could be helpful to all students, even those who do not know anything about law school.
“For [undergrad] students that are interested in law school, they need to know that a specific major is not required,” Connolly said.
“There really is no pre-law major that is necessary for law school. Those are some important things people can get out of the workshop.”
Jenkins, a third-year law student, said the best way to learn about law school is by talking with law students.
“I think people are surprised when they come to these types of [workshops] because there are a lot of myths that are debunked,” Jenkins said.
“You talk with people and they have a certain perception of law school and the process, and then they think something completely different [after the workshop].”
