Is Sweetest Day still a ‘Hallmark holiday?’

DeKALB | For students who forgot the flowers and ate the candy that was supposed to be for their Valentine’s Day sweethearts, there is still a chance for redemption.

Saturday is Sweetest Day, a holiday usually deemed as just another “Hallmark holiday.”

The holiday was created with an actual meaning though. According to pressroom.hallmark.com, Sweetest Day started in the 1920s as a time for orphans and shut-ins to be recognized and cared for.

The day was created by a candy company employee in Ohio so people could show others they cared. Is this still the case? The Northern Star asked several students for their opinions on Sweetest Day.
