Huskies must win to get in
October 25, 2006
DeKALB | Eight years: that’s how long it has been since the NIU women’s soccer team last made the MAC Tournament.
But for the first time since 1998, the Huskies control their own destiny.
NIU (5-10-2 overall, 4-6 MAC) will host Western Michigan (3-14-1, 2-8) at 3 p.m. today at Huskie Soccer Field with a win getting the Huskies into the tournament.
A week ago, making the MAC Tournament was a far fetched idea. Tied with Akron and Eastern Michigan, NIU looked like it would extend its streak. But both teams lost this past week, and now all NIU has to do is win and they are in.
“It’s important for us to win Thursday against Western Michigan in order to play in the MAC Tournament,” NIU assistant coach Paul Jobson said. “Western Michigan’s record may not be good but they still have some things to play for.”
Aside from a tournament spot on the line, today’s game is also Senior Day; something Jobson said may be even more important.
“The number one importance of this game is senior Megan Kolkay. It will be her last regular home game.” Jobson said. “She has truly been a great leader and captain for the team.”
The Broncos are currently in last place in the standings. But WMU defeated NIU 2-1 last season and holds a 6-3 lead in the all-time series over the Huskies.
The game will be WMU’s last regular season game, bringing importance for its seniors to go out well.
“They have a senior that is just shy of the university’s goal-scoring record.” Jobson said. “WMU’s season isn’t over yet. They’re going to really bring their game. It will be a tough battle.”
