DeKALB | An NIU student died Oct. 6 in the Holmes Student Center outside of TCF Bank.

John W. Garity, 43, was a senior political science major.

The cause of death is still under investigation by the DeKalb County Coroner’s office.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Garity,” said Brian Hemphill, vice president of student affairs. “He is an individual that will be remembered by many members of our community. He will truly be missed.”

The information was not immediately released due to the sensitivity of the matter and the need to clarify certain aspects of the situation, according to sources.
