DeKALB | Freshman Cara Stutler made sure her first career goal with the NIU women’s soccer team counted.

From 25 yards out, Stutler scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Maddie Lehman, in the 21st minute of the Huskies’ 2-0 win over Kent State (6-6-1 overall, 3-2 MAC) Friday.

“This is a great win for us, a huge win,” NIU assistant coach Paul Jobson said. “Everyone stepped up and it was a great team effort. We put together our offense and defense. It is a great feeling for our team.”

On the defensive end, NIU (3-8-2, 2-4) goalie Lindsey Curnock shut out the Golden Flashes with four saves. It was her third shutout of the season.

The Huskies couldn’t capitalize on Friday’s momentum, however, as they fell to Buffalo 2-1 Sunday.

The first goal scored by the Bulls (6-7, 3-3) in Sunday’s matchup came from Andrea Vescio in the 42nd minute.

In the 75th minute Karen Enockson scored her seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick.

“We let this one slip through the cracks,” Jobson said. “We played great soccer, but we need to finish. [Sunday] was a great team effort. It’s unfortunate that the game just got away.”

Huskie keeper Lindsay Curnock finished the game with six saves while Bulls goalkeeper Amy Coron had nine saves.
