Hunt ends in arrest

DeKALB | DeKalb Police cooperated with U.S. Marshals, Illinois State Police and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Officers Saturday in an operation resulting in three arrests.

Police arrested Eldrich M. Anderson, 27, of Chicago, on a Chicago warrant for first-degree murder, a Cook County warrant for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and Racine County, Wis. warrants for possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force developed information on Anderson’s whereabouts and asked for assistance from the other law enforcement agencies in apprehending him.

U.S. Marshals conducted surveillance and determined a time and place to arrest Anderson, Kayes said. The arrest took place at 12:30 a.m. at 356 Augusta Ave., a residence a few blocks east of campus.

DeKalb Police said the incident was not related to recent gang activity on the east side of town.

In addition to Anderson, police also arrested Henry Mack, 35, of DeKalb, and Patrick Pierre, 26. Both were charged for warrants for failing to appear in court and for possession of a controlled substance.

Kayes said police also located a .45 caliber pistol in the basement of the residence. Police did not know who owned the handgun. Kayes said the weapon will be sent to a lab for ballistic comparison in order to determine if it was used in a crime, and that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms would trace it to determine to whom it was originally sold.

Police transported Anderson, Mack and Pierre to DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Jail.

Kayes said arrests such as Anderson’s lend themselves to coordinated police action.

“It went well for this kind of thing,” Kayes said. “This guy is a dangerous fellow. These are the times when you need to have policemen with guns going in and taking care of things.”
